Updated Jul 29, 2026Slight edge 220 tickers

Does buying pullbacks inside a stacked moving-average uptrend work?

Across 214 of 220 tickers between 2015-01-01 and 2024-12-31, average return was 0.88%, average max drawdown -10.45%.

A thin edge: +0.88% mean return across 214 tickers, with -10.45% average drawdown — the edge is too small to call a live signal.

What we tested

Strategy

We want to only buy pullbacks when the trend structure across three timeframes agrees, using stacked moving averages as the trend filter. Compute the 10, 20, and 50 day simple moving averages. A bar qualifies as a bullish trend day when the 10 day average is above the 20 day average and the 20 day average is above the 50 day average. Enter long the next trading day at the open when, on a qualifying bullish trend day, the low of the bar touches or goes below the 20 day simple moving average and the bar closes above its own open (a bullish reversal bar). On the entry bar, measure the 14 period ATR and place a protective stop 1.5 ATR below the entry price. Size the position so that hitting that stop loses exactly 1 percent of account equity. Round down to a whole number of shares. Take profit at 2R, that is two times the distance between entry and stop, placed above the entry. Also exit at the next open if the close goes below the 50 day simple moving average, since that breaks the trend structure. If the position has been held for 30 trading days without resolving, exit at the next open. Long only. One open position per ticker at a time. No leverage and no pyramiding.
